Greater Joy School officially began in 2009 by Ospeck and Angelina Sichilongo, a local Zambian couple. The school began in a Pentecostal Holiness Church in the Chimwemwe township of Kitwe. In 2010 Beyond Ourselves sent two building teams to work alongside local laborers to build this school a classroom block, which for Ospeck was a dream come true.
Before the classroom block was built the school educated approximately 100 children in the main hall of their church building. Using the church benches as seats and desks, children have been learning from volunteer teachers who have faithfully taught these children for several years.
Now the school has the opportunity to educate approximately 300 children in its classroom block. Beyond Ourselves started it’s child sponsorship programme there in 2011 which means that the teachers are now being paid, children are receiving a healthy meal each school day and receiving basic medical care.
Beyond Ourselves also works with Greater Joy School on a sawmill project. The sawmill is creating employment in the surrounding area. Some of the income and material from this project is used for Greater Joy School. This is one of the ways Beyond Ourselves is looking to set up businesses in Zambia to help the long term sustainability of the schools we partner with.
