Pastor Festus Mwila and his wife Mercy started Janna School in 2005, when they saw the need of the many orphans and vulnerable children in their local community in Ndeke, Ndola. They had a vision and a heart to give these children the opportunity to receive an education and a hope for the future.
Festus and Mercy used what they had available to them and started a community school in their church building, with local volunteer teachers.
We met Festus and Mercy in 2007 and loved their heart for the children and their community. They were teaching 250 children with very little resource and space, so we asked them if there was any way we could be of help. In response to this, in 2008 Stephen James BMW, one of the businesses we partner with here in the UK, sent 16 of their staff to build a much needed classroom block.
Since then the partnership with Janna School and Beyond Ourselves has grown and in 2010 we launched our first child sponsorship programme for the 330 children now at Janna School. This enables the school to provide the children not only with an education but also with a meal each school day, access to a local nurse, a school uniform and school resources.
